Tiimityötaitoja ja yhteisöllisyyttä Intercultural teamwork -työpajoissa

SEAMKissa järjestettiin 28.–29.5.2026 kaksi Intercultural teamwork -työpajaa, joissa opiskelijat harjoittelivat moninaisissa tiimeissä tarvittavia yhteistyö- ja vuorovaikutustaitoja toiminnallisten tehtävien avulla. Työpajojen tavoitteena oli kehittää opiskelijoiden taitoja työskennellä monikulttuurisessa ympäristössä, tukea dialogia eri kulttuurien välillä ja auttaa osallistujia tutustumaan toisiinsa ja aloittamaan yhteiset projektinsa.

Työpajoihin osallistui yhteensä 20 SEAMKin opiskelijaa, jotka olivat kevään aikana suunnitelleet oman harrasteryhmän eli SIG-ryhmän (Special Interest Group) perustamista tai olivat muuten kiinnostuneita kehittämään kulttuurienvälistä kompetenssiaan. Työpajat järjesti SEAMKin ja VAMKin yhteinen Tilaa kulttuureille – Room for Cultures -hanke, ja ne liittyivät hankkeen tavoitteeseen edistää kulttuurien välistä vuoropuhelua ja osallisuutta SEAMKin kansainvälisessä korkeakouluyhteisössä. Ohjaajina toimivat HEROES-korkeakoulu Deggendorf Institute of Technologyn professori Rainer Waldmann ja SEAMKin viestinnän ja suomen kielen lehtori Noora Kivimäki.

Toiminnalliset harjoitukset haastoivat tiimityötaitoja

Työpajat alkoivat ryhmäytys- ja keskusteluharjoituksilla, joissa osallistujat pohtivat omaa taustaansa, kokemuksiaan ja arvojaan sekä jakoivat niitä muiden kanssa. Välillä luokkahuone muuttui karttapalloksi, josta sai etsiä itselleen tärkeän paikan; välillä taas kokemuksia käsiteltiin mustavalkoisten valokuvien avulla tai kertomalla tarina oman nimen takaa. Harjoitusten tavoitteena oli lisätä ymmärrystä omista ja oman kulttuurin arvoista ja avata myös uusia, itselle vieraita näkökulmia. Keskustelun päätteeksi osallistujat tekivätkin havainnon, että eroista huolimatta he ajattelivat monista asioista hyvin samoin.

Työpajoissa tehtiin myös toiminnallisia ongelmanratkaisutehtäviä, joissa osallistujat pääsivät haastamaan tiimityötaitonsa ja harjoittelemaan kommunikointia, kuuntelemista ja päätöksentekoa. Opiskelijat esimerkiksi ratkaisivat yhdessä tietokonekoodin muistipeliä pelaamalla ja selvittivät kuvioiden värejä ja muotoja silmät sidottuina. Tehtävien jälkeen pysähdyttiin reflektoimaan omaa ja ryhmän toimintaa: keskusteltiin siitä, miten valintoja tehtiin ja eri näkemykset otettiin huomioon, miten virheisiin reagoitiin ja miten viestintä ylipäätään tehtävässä onnistui.

Palaute työpajoista oli positiivista: osallistujat olivat tyytyväisiä yllättäviin ja haastaviin ryhmätehtäviin ja kokivat, että ne auttoivat ymmärtämään omaa roolia ja vuorovaikutuksen merkitystä tiimityöskentelyssä. Yhteinen aamupäivä tarjosi myös uusia tuttavuuksia, joiden kanssa suunniteltiin jo seuraavia tapaamisia työpajan päätteeksi lounaalla.

Työpajat järjestänyt Tilaa kulttuureille – Room for Cultures on Euroopan unionin osarahoittama ja SEAMKin ja VAMKin yhteistyössä toteuttama hanke. Hanke jatkaa työskentelyä kulttuurien välisen vuoropuhelun, osallisuuden ja hyvinvoinnin vahvistamiseksi Etelä-Pohjanmaalla ja Pohjanmaalla. Hanke kestää heinäkuuhun 2028 saakka ja tekee mielellään yhteistyötä ammattilaisten kanssa kulttuurihyvinvoinnin tukemiseksi. Teamwork skills and a sense of community in the Intercultural teamwork workshops

On 28–29 May 2026, two Intercultural teamwork workshops were organised at SEAMK. In the workshops, students practised the collaboration and interaction skills needed in diverse teams through hands-on activities. The aim of the workshops was to develop students’ ability to work in a multicultural environment, support dialogue between different cultures, and help participants get to know one another and begin their joint projects.

A total of 20 SEAMK students took part in the workshops. During the spring, they had either been planning to establish their own special interest group (SIG group), or were otherwise interested in developing their intercultural competence. The workshops were organised by the joint Tilaa kulttuureille – Room for Cultures project of SEAMK and VAMK, and the workshops supported the project’s aim of promoting intercultural dialogue and inclusion within SEAMK’s international higher education community. The facilitators were Professor Dr. Rainer Waldmann from the HEROES university Deggendorf Institute of Technology and Noora Kivimäki, Senior Lecturer in Communication and Finnish at SEAMK.

Hands-on exercises challenged teamwork skills

The workshops began with icebreaker and discussion activities in which participants reflected on their own backgrounds, experiences and values and shared them with others. At times, the classroom turned into a globe on which participants could find a place that was meaningful to them; at other times, experiences were explored through black-and-white photographs or by telling the story behind one’s own name. The aim of the exercises was to increase understanding of one’s own values and those of one’s culture, while also opening up new perspectives that might feel unfamiliar. At the end of the discussion, participants observed that despite their differences, they shared very similar views on many things.

The workshops also included hands-on problem-solving tasks in which participants were able to challenge their teamwork skills and practise communication, listening and decision-making. For example, the students worked together to solve a computer code by playing a memory game and identified the colours and shapes of figures while blindfolded. After the tasks, the group reflected on both individual and group performance: they discussed how choices were made and different viewpoints were taken into account, how mistakes were responded to, and how communication functioned overall during the task.

Feedback on the workshops was positive: participants were pleased with the surprising and challenging group tasks and felt that they helped them understand their own role and the importance of interaction in teamwork. The workshop also led to new acquaintances, and by lunchtime at the end of the workshop, participants were already planning future meetings together.

Tilaa kulttuureille – Room for Cultures, which organised the workshops, is a project co-funded by the European Union and implemented in cooperation between SEAMK and VAMK. The project will continue its work to strengthen intercultural dialogue, inclusion and well-being in South Ostrobothnia and Ostrobothnia.
